Town Supervisor

The highest elected official in Meredith is the Town Supervisor, Keitha Capouya. Keitha is the first woman to serve in that position in the town’s history.

The position combines executive and legislative duties. The Supervisor is the chief financial officer, answerable to the state comptroller. The Supervisor, for example, can negotiate and sign contracts for the Town and is responsible for the payroll for town employees. Keitha is also the Town Budget Officer. The Supervisor is a member of the Town Board (see below), presiding at its meetings.

In addition, the Supervisor serves as one of the nineteen members of the Delaware County Board of Supervisors, the county’s governing body.

The Supervisor is elected for a two-year term, which expires in 2011.

Town Board

The Town Board is the elected governing body for Meredith. Its members are responsible for the raising and expenditure of taxes and other revenue and for the passage of laws that protect the health, safety and well-being of residents. They establish priorities for the town through approval of the annual budget.

The Board appoints members of the Town Planning Board and officials such as the Tax Assessor, Code Enforcement Officer, Health Officer and others who are not subject to election by the voters.

The Town Board consists of five members: the Town Supervisor and four Members of Council.  Council Members serve four-year terms.  The terms of John Janiszewski and Paul Menke expire in 2013.  The terms of Ronald Bailey and Daniel Birnbaum expire in 2011.

Regular meetings of the Town Board take place in the Meredith Town Hall at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month.  Visitors are welcome. Residents are urged to bring their concerns before the Board. Please contact the Supervisor before the meeting to be granted privilege of the floor.
