Bill Jester, the Highway Superintendent, oversees a department of six full-time employees responsible for maintaining and improving 82 miles of town road. The department is housed in the town garages adjacent to Town Hall on the Turnpike.
During the winter, the department’s main job is the control of snow and ice. During the rest of the year, it handles a variety of duties, including brush control and patching, paving, stoning and oiling roads. About one-third of town roads are paved.
Meredith contains a total of 103 miles of roads, of which about 8 miles are state highways and 13 miles are county highways.
The Highway Superintendent serves a two-year term, which expires in 2010.
