The familiar wooden cows are missing from the roadsides this spring. The Meredith Dairy Fest [...]

The familiar wooden cows are missing from the roadsides this spring. The Meredith Dairy Fest will not be held this June.

Members of the Meridale Fire Department voted to cancel the event, which has been an annual event on the Catskill Turnpike since the late 1990s. The Dairy Fest was founded by two leading members of the department, John Hamilton and Bob Pelinsky, to raise funds and promote dairy farming. It has typically attracted an estimated 10,000 visitors to animal exhibits, children’s rides, concerts, vendor displays and games such as cow-plop bingo.

According to some members, the vote to cancel was based on several factors, including the vagaries of weather. Last year winds damaged tents before the start of the Dairy Fest, requiring their last-minute replacement; heavy rains then held down attendance. A few years ago, severe winds ripped down tents and forced cancellation of the event.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued guidelines for discouraging encounters with black bears. The guidance points out that with the advent of warm weather the black bear population will be on the move.

“Typically black bears are timid and will avoid all contact with humans,” the DEC says. But these animals are attracted to sources of food, including garbage and bird feeder.

The guidance was provided to the website by Jerry Fraine, DEC officer who lives in Meredith. Black Bear Encounters, DEC
